Many people clasify Goji Berries as a superfood, but what is a superfood and are there certin rules that you need to go by, before a food can be considered super? These are all great questions, but the answer is not. In searching around it seems that there is no clear test that a food has to go through in order to be called a superfood. One thing that is clear is that foods that are to be in that catorgy do need to pass some general questions.

Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham show off their svelte figures during The Spice Girls world tour

The Spice Girl and fashion designer has told friends that she doesn’t want to have a frozen face like the rest of Hollywood, and has been eating exotic Goji berries in a bid to help smoothen out her skin.

Goji berries, which contain up to 500 times more Vitamin C than oranges, store linoleic acid which is an essential fat that plumpens up the skin and makes it appear more youthful.

This is not the first time Mrs Beckham has resorted to unusual methods to help keep her figure trim and her face looking young. Earlier this year she reportedly existed on a diet of soya edamame beans, strawberries and lettuce and drank a 2 pint "shake" of a chlorella algae and dulse seaweed every day, in a bid to remain svelte for the Spice Girls reunion tour.

Dulse seaweed helps balance the bodies metabolic rate whilst chlorella algae can help to detoxify the skin and potentially assists with the breakdown of deposits of fat.

Nearly 1/3 of all the food we eat has NO nutritional value. In 1990 the US Department of Agriculture stated that the nutritional value of food was seven times less than it was in 1958. Most nutritionists feel that is a very very conservative estimate. Some put it at over 50 times less. But let's be as conservative as the United States government. If your body needs "proper nutrition" to function properly, then that means you need to eat seven times more. There are some nutrients our body needs that have almost disappeared.

Even with its extensive and diverse nutrient profile revealed, the goji still seemed to be holding on to some secrets. There appeared to be many therapeutic effects that simply could not be explained. This was not a big surprise. With medicinal herbs, activity is hardly ever due to just one single chemical constituent, as is often the case with “conventional” drugs. Rather, it is usually a mixture of constituents that are responsible for the therapeutic or protective effect of botanical medicines. Many of these herbal components are unique to a single plant species. They are not found anywhere else in nature, and have not yet been chemically identified. There are countless thousands of these herbal constituents called phytochemicals (from the Greek word for “plant”). Very few official methods are available for analyzing phytochemicals. Researchers were forced to develop qualitative and semi-quantitative chromatographic methods of separation and analysis in the painstaking attempt to unravel the complex chemical nature of botanicals. So it was with the goji berry. The goal of scientists was to try to determine all of its biologically active principles, so that they could ascertain which of the many varieties of Lycium goji berries might be the most beneficial to humans.

The researchers knew that it might take many years to isolate and quantify every chemical constituent. However, they had an ingenious idea for a shortcut that would allow them to positively identify and catalog each type of berry, separating even those that appeared to be identical. Their solution was called spectroscopic analysis, a fingerprinting technique borrowed from the science of astrophysics.
